Do I Need Snowmobile Insurance for a Rental?

Snowy destinations offer the opportunity to indulge in winter activities like snowmobiling. If you’re traveling to a snowy location, renting a snowmobile is a great way to add excitement to your winter getaway. However, like any high-speed outdoor activity, snowmobiling comes with the risk of injury and damage to the snowmobile or your surroundings.

Before you hit the trails, think about whether you need snowmobile rental insurance. Then, make sure you have the right protection in place. Here’s what you need to know about insurance for your snowmobile rental.

There Are Different Types of Snowmobile Coverage

Similar to auto insurance coverage, snowmobile insurance coverage can include liability coverages, which protect damages and injuries caused by an accident that was your fault, and collision and comprehensive coverages, which cover damages to the snowmobile. The range of coverage options include:

    • Bodily injury: If you cause an accident, this coverage will help cover costs associated with injuries suffered by others.
    • Property damage: If you cause an accident, this coverage will help cover costs associated with damage to others’ property.
    • Comprehensive: This coverage will help pay for non-collision incidents like vandalism, fire, etc.
    • Collision: This coverage will help pay for damages to your snowmobile as a result of a collision.

Your Existing Policy May Provide Some Snowmobile Rental Coverage

If you have snowmobile insurance for a sled you own, your policy may extend some coverages, like liability coverages, to your rental. However, it may not cover the damage to a rental or damage caused to someone else’s property while operating a rented snowmobile. Contact your local agent to check your auto, home and snowmobile policies to see whether your existing insurance will cover your rented snowmobile.

You May Need to Purchase Additional Snowmobile Rental Insurance

Often, the company you’re renting from will offer insurance coverage for your snowmobile rental. Before purchasing snowmobile rental insurance from the company you’re renting from, read the fine print to make sure the coverage they’re offering provides the desired spectrum and amounts of coverages.
